Albany Residence

This residence has been in the same family for 40+ years. The third and current generation thought it was time to give the family summer home a good sprucing up. The original house had a dark and foreboding presence - all of the exterior (and the majority of the interiors) were stained very dark colors.

 

The clients are very fond of Norwegian vernacular architecture - the bright and festive fishing shacks of the northern fjords. Interior and exterior paint and stain choices were influenced by this architectural style. “Sled beds” were also added in two of the home’s bedrooms.

 

A lively creek flows within several feet of the back of the house. It was a priority to feature this delightful site asset, with generous windows bringing the light and sound of the water to the dining room and kitchen work spaces. Combined with lighter and fresher colors, these areas have been transformed.

 

A little-used main floor bathroom was eliminated allowing the newly remodeled kitchen to stretch and breathe. Windows are now generous towards the creek and make for a lovely dining experience.

 

The original exterior detailing was also in rough shape. Architecturally appropriate knee braces and brackets were added, and a new entry structure was designed to feature the exquisite detail of the existing entry door. Red cedar shingle siding was added to the exterior below the water table band.

 

Ready for use by the next several generations, this home will continue to serve as their family retreat from city life…
